Nick played in his first soccer game. No practice but who needs it at the age of four.
The family allowed me to catch one stage of the Tour of Utah featuring to Tour de France riders (Dave Z. and Floyd Landis). Fun to watch but the boys were better entertainment.
Taking the boys on the hike can be a bit unpredictable. On this day Nick decided hiking wasn’t for him.
We headed out to get some pictures of the boys at Memory Grove. Just over 10 years ago Stacey and I had our wedding reception here in the park.
The snow hadn’t melted enough to get to our intended destination of Cecret Lake so we ended up playing in the lower portion of Little Cottonwood Canyon and having lunch in a nearby park.
The boys of the house (minus Simon) headed out for a chilly night of camping with other dads of the congregation.
The kids can’t wait for the warmth of Summer. Until then they will take any partially warm day as an opportunity to head to the park.
Simon celebrated his first birthday by devouring a caterpillar made of cup cakes. He didn’t even care about opening any presents.
Grandma Annie sent our family tickets to see Walking With Dinosaurs. The show mesmerized Nick the entire time while Simon tried to mooch popcorn and other treats from surrounding families.
Nick suited up with his cowboy apron in order to help Stacey bake quick breads in the kitchen.
The boys refused to pose together for a Halloween portrait. Something about Robin being afraid of Frankenstein.
Even though the temperatures were cooler the boys loved the beach. On our last day we even let Simon down on the sand. These pictures were taken near Neskowin.
On our last day in Oregon we took the boys on a 3 mile hike to see the Drift Creek Falls Suspension Bridge. It is located about 10 miles inland of Lincoln City.
We drove into Portland to visit the Portland Children’s Museum with the boys. Their favorite parts were the water works and the clay/pottery.
What would a trip to the coast be without a visit to an aquarium. Fortunately Newport has a great one. Nick loved the sharks and Andrew was daring enough to touch a starfish.
Our trip to the Oregon Coast also included a lot of sight seeing. Images that didn’t fall into a particular place that we visited have been dumped into this photobook.
Tillamook is home to one of the larger collections of privately owned historic military aircraft in the United States. What is even more amazing is that the collection is housed in a World War II blimp hangar that is over 1,000 feet long and 300 feet wide (big enough to hold 6 football fields).
Stopping by Multnomah Falls along the Hood River was a welcome relief to sore butts after 10 hours of travel time in the car.
Andrew was excited to finally be able to sit with Simon for more than 10 seconds and then it was off to the park for a chilly evening outdoors.
It was a rainy Saturday so after the boys had their fill of playing outside they came inside for some hot “chocklick.”
It was one of the last warm days of September and the kids wanted to get wet so we let them play in the sprinklers.
The Miller family headed up to Midway, Utah for the marriage of Tammy Brown and Britten Martin.
Nick and his friend Josh headed off to their first day of preschool. Nick was excited to finally “get to learn something.”
It’s harvest time at the Miller residence and while we really don’t garden that well it still makes for some fall fun each year. For the second year in a row we have taken the walnuts and placed them on the fence for the squirrels since we really have no desire to do anything with them.
AJ and the Silver Dragons played their second game of the season. It was pretty uneventful.
Grandma Miller was in town so we headed up to Red Butte Garden for a picnic dinner. The boys loved the children’s garden.
AJ playing for the Silver Dragons started off the Fall 2008 soccer season against the Green Dragons.
Simon took up driving this week. The plastic from the car made his hard stand on end and he found the horn to be an excellent pacifier.
We went as a family to The Living Planet Aquarium. It’s a small aquarium that is still growing but the boys loved it anyway.
Nick and AJ were dressed in green and waiting to leave for our family picture with the rest of the Thornock family so took them out to the garden area for a little bit of entertainment.
The dinosaurs came out to play today and the boys wanted pictures to prove they were in our yard.
Simon has grown out of the infant tub and now fits perfectly in the kitchen sink. He also has discovered that a wash rag is better than a binky so long as it doesn’t have residual soap in it - not that anything happened.
We decided to beat the heat of the Salt Lake Valley and head up to the Uintah mountains. After spending some time at the Provo River Falls we stopped by Mirror Lake. On the way home we stopped by Spin Cafe in Heber for some of the best gelato this side of the Atlantic Ocean.
AJ and Nick rode in the Farmington Days bicycle race. AJ “spun out” thinking that if his legs were going fast he must be as well even though a majority of the pack was fading away in the distance. Nick brought along dad for some extra horsepower but still preferred to watch from the back of the field. Even though they each placed closer to the bottom than the top they loved it and want to race again.
On the 4th we celebrated at home with food from the grill and a small (but legally approved in Utah) fireworks display. Next year we might consider upgraded to fireworks from Wyoming but probably not.
Stacey decided that s’mores would be a great treat so we fired up the grill and had a great time. Nick was more about the ‘mallows than the s’mores but he’ll figure it out some day.
We celebrated AJ’s birthday with JT and Julie (uncle & aunt), Chris and Tiffany (uncle & aunt) and their children, Jameson, Suzana, and Sophie. It was his first time through a spanking machine but he came out with only minor bruising.
AJ celebrated his birthday with friends at the Kangaroo Zoo in North Salt Lake. They even provided a teenager full of energy to chase them through all the blow-up rides and keep them entertained. Well worth the birthday party fee if you ask me.
As I headed off to work one morning I was reminded of what it meant to have school out for summer - relaxing mornings without a schedule.
Andrew and his kindergarten class celebrated their graduation. Nick insisted on reminding us of the silly nature of a kindergarten graduation.
